Strengthening Trust: Our Approach to Transparent Peer Review and Open Data

Trust in research is not declared — it is built into how a publisher works. Today we are setting out two principles that guide Xpertia: transparent peer review and meaningful data availability. Across scholarly publishing, the direction is clear. Nature made transparent peer review standard for new research submissions in June 2025. Major medical journals have required data-sharing statements since 2018. And the once-common phrase "data available on request" is now widely distrusted — one study of clinical trials found that almost none of the data promised "on request" was actually obtainable. The lesson is simple: trust signals only count when they are backed by something real. Peer review you can see We are committed to publishing peer-review reports and author responses alongside the articles they shaped, so readers can see the scrutiny a paper survived. Reviewer identities remain anonymous by default, with the option for reviewers to sign if they choose — an approach that protects candour, especially for early-career reviewers, while opening up the process. Data availability that means it We ask authors for data availability statements that name a trusted repository and a persistent identifier — not the vague "on request." Where data genuinely cannot be shared for legal or ethical reasons, we ask that the reason be stated plainly. The aim is the FAIR standard: data that is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, kept as open as possible and as closed as necessary. Built on shared standards These principles are not house rules invented in isolation. They align with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME), the ICMJE recommendations, the FAIR data principles, and the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines. We are adopting them in phases as our journals grow, and we will report honestly on our progress. This is what we mean by trust through structure: credibility that comes from how we are built, not from what we claim.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Climate Science Communication

The Journal of Science Communication and Public Engagement, published on the Xpertia platform, is accepting submissions for a special issue on Climate Science Communication in the Post-Truth Era.Submission deadline: September 30, 2026This special issue invites original research articles, systematic reviews, and opinion pieces that examine how climate science findings are communicated to non-specialist audiences. Topics of interest include the effectiveness of different communication strategies across media formats, the role of scientists as public communicators, misinformation and its correction, and the ethics of science communication in politically polarised environments.Submissions are accepted in English. The guest editors welcome work from a wide range of disciplines including communication studies, science journalism, environmental psychology, sociology of science, and climate science itself.All submitted manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review. The issue is planned for publication in early 2027 and will be fully open access. APCs are waived for authors from low-income countries.Authors interested in submitting are encouraged to send a 250-word abstract to the editorial team in advance of the full submission to confirm fit with the issue scope.

Conference Hub: Full Launch for Academic Event Management

Following a successful pilot phase with a group of academic societies, Xpertia is pleased to announce the full public launch of the Xpertia Conference Hub — a dedicated platform for the management and promotion of academic conferences.The Conference Hub provides everything an organizing committee needs in a single environment: conference profile pages, registration management, call-for-papers submission, abstract review workflows, programme scheduling, and proceedings publication directly linked to the Xpertia journal ecosystem.Conferences registered on the Hub are automatically indexed in our searchable conference directory, making them discoverable to researchers across all disciplines. Accepted papers can be published as conference proceedings with assigned DOIs through partner journals on the platform.During the pilot phase, organising committees used the Hub to run their events end to end — from call for papers and abstract review through to published proceedings.Academic societies, departments, and independent conference organizers are invited to register their upcoming events on the Hub. After months of development and beta testing with selected publishers, Xpertia's next-generation Manuscript Submission Portal is now available to participating journals on the platform.The new portal replaces the legacy submission system with a cleaner, faster interface designed around the real-world needs of authors and editorial teams. Key improvements include a streamlined multi-step submission form, real-time validation of file formats and metadata, co-author invitation and consent workflows, and integrated ORCID authentication for author identification.Editorial offices will also benefit from a redesigned dashboard showing submission queues, assignment workflows, and decision history in a single view. Peer reviewers now receive clearer invitations with deadline reminders and a simplified review submission form.The portal was developed in close consultation with journal editors and authors from our user community. Feedback from the beta phase led to over 40 targeted improvements before the public release.Authors can access the portal directly from any journal page. Xpertia Publishing has introduced a new suite of AI-assisted tools designed to support — not replace — the human judgment at the heart of academic peer review.The tools, available to all editors on the platform, include an automated manuscript screening tool that checks for completeness, formatting consistency, and common methodological reporting gaps before a submission enters formal review. A separate reviewer-matching module uses research area keywords and publication history to suggest qualified reviewers, reducing the time editors spend on recruitment.A plagiarism and similarity analysis module has also been integrated, providing editors with a detailed similarity report to support their assessment of originality.Xpertia is committed to responsible AI use in scholarly publishing. All AI-generated recommendations are presented as suggestions only — editors retain full authority over all decisions. Open Access in 2026: Key Policy Changes for Authors and Publishers

A series of national and institutional open access mandates are taking effect in 2026, with significant implications for journals and authors publishing on Xpertia. This announcement summarises the key changes and what they mean for our community.Plan S compliance: Journals associated with funders aligned with cOAlition S are required to offer a fully compliant open access publishing route. Our editorial team can assist publishers in applying for or confirming compliance status, and we are working to surface this information clearly on journal profiles.Embargo period restrictions: Several major funding bodies have reduced maximum embargo periods to six months (sciences) or twelve months (humanities). Authors publishing on funded research should verify the embargo policy of their chosen journal before submission. We encourage journals to display embargo period information clearly on their landing pages.APC transparency: New transparency requirements mean that all Article Processing Charges (APCs) must be clearly listed before submission. All journals on Xpertia are now required to disclose APCs, including any waiver or discount policies, on their journal profile.Xpertia will continue to update this guidance as further mandates come into effect. Authors and editors with specific questions about compliance are encouraged to contact our editorial policy team.
